---Finally an at least temporary break in the excessive heat and humidity, which I know has had a lot of people in its grip and still will for a while. I don’t know if it is much to blame for my continuing torpor, since we have air conditioning and a strategically placed phalanx of fans--perhaps not enough to make the upstairs okay for sleeping, but certainly enough to keep me from dripping sweat on the computer. (Can’t say the same for the digital camera, though.)

Simak, Clifford D. ETERNITY LOST: The Collected Stories of..., Volume 1, Darkside '04, one of 520 numbered copies, (Pelan intro; Stephensen-Payne story notes), new in dj 45.00---It was starting to look like I might go through the whole week without any new-book arrivals. Seems I have been getting enough of a charge from the rediscovery of books being brought up from the cellar for their covershot closeups, which project I continue with off and on, although the heat/humidity here now prevent me from doing as much as I might otherwise, since I like to take the shots in our solarium with its ample natural light, but where these days now it is mostly a place more for sweat induction than anything else.

---Phonecall from Jacob Weisman at Tachyon selling me on a few copies of a special 100-copy edition of their new Tim Powers book coming out presently--essentially the galleys with a new cover put on them, selling for $25 instead of the list $16. And a booklet (“in the Chris Drumm tradition”) with a story by jazzist Sidney Bechet that is not available through their regular distributor.They also have signed copies of their Carol Emshwiller book available.

---Still trying to get out of the vacation mode. As if I needed another diversion, I am experimenting with burning my two covershot and my Catalog Data CD-Rs onto a DVD-R. First try-out contains 1.84 GB, less than 40% of capacity--but still what would take three CD-Rs to contain. If it works I should have another thing to offer which might not add to my bottom line to the degree that expenditure of effort might aspire to, but which could be something that would make it easier for anyone interested to see what I have here beyond catalog listings--and see them in a way that catalog listings don’t show and without having to swap among three or more CD-Rs. Seems like it will take a little longer to burn these things each time, so it won’t be something I will be including with every order from anyone who shows signs of having a computer at their disposal. But starting next month, when Costco has their DVD-R spindle sale coupon, I should be able to make the things available. I’m still thinking “free with order” and maybe $5 separately, with that $5 attached as a credit to your account for future use.

---Have received impetus to get an order out to Tor/St. Martin’s now, especially for this year’s Dozois and Datlow Year’s Best annuals, so I will be trying to make it a point to get that done in the next couple days, if anyone has anything they want from these publishers (as well as FSG, Holt, Picador, Minotaur, Forge). Don’t forget the discount (30%).
---Gradually working my way back into the routine, which is not all that impressive to begin with--but from not realizing until subsequent days just how tired our “vacation” had left me, being not accustomed to being out in the world much, driving on highways a lot, and all the rest of it, the low-grade adrenaline drip doubtless making me feel alert and capable at the time but leaving me with a debt to be repaid later...or maybe it was the heat and humidity returning last week...or maybe the stack of NY Times proving too tempting too often--whatever it was, I am still trying to get myself to put in a better performance than what I have been exhibiting lately. (Those who are bearing with me, I appreciate it.)

---”Weekly” blogmail is being sent four days late owing to camping trip I got hauled off on. Turned out to be a nice vacation, despite a couple weather events that put a damper on things. Probably won’t send a blogmail on the usual Monday or Tuesday next week. It is a holiday anyway--one that I noticed many Minnesotans leaving the Twin Cities heading north were getting off to a bad start on, with a huge amount of traffic stop-and-go the other way, while we had smooth sailing heading south back to Iowa and the pea-soup of heat and humidity--though for the moment we found it much improved when we made it home last night.
---I was able to check email once at the public library in Two Harbors, weeding out all the staples.com offers, audio advisor clearance updates, netflix advisories, etc. etc. etc. I was unable to answer any pertinent emails on the clunky connection (and I thought mine was bad) in the time alotted--but that was my fault because I sat down at the library’s card-catalog computer without bothering to look at the clearly marked sign, replacing the library’s pre-set with the URL for AOL and getting to my email that way. It worked, but not very well.
---Now that I am back I will endeavor to get myself back on track. The worse part of vacations, I’ve found, is not the time away but the time spent running around in circles before finding the way to get back in the harness--which I am never that good with anyway--in the days after returning.
