---I tell you what, I am enjoying the idea of putting my catalog text out there in cyberspace more than the prospect of issuing another printed version. Where the titles could possibly be googled by anyone who might actually be after them is where I would like them to be--out there, at least somewhere. It may be a little bit of extra work right now, but I am hoping it will be worthwhile. Thusfar I have 186 items from prospective Catalog 145 ready to upload--just shy of the 200 required to get started on biblio.com.
---About ten seconds before Amy left the house this morning I mentioned what I am doing and showed her the text I had so far, and she quickly surmised that I am doing it all wrong--that I am using software that is outdated; that I don’t have it in the proper format and if I did it won’t work right the way I am doing it. No doubt I will have hurdles to try to negotiate that I am not now aware of. I admit I am not the pointiest arrow in the quiver, but I still have hopes I can get a decent start here pretty soon.

---Sent my listings for next hardcover page after the last one in Catalog 144 up to the Internet (home) computer for conversion to format appropriate for listing at biblio.com--at least that is my hope. They want at least 200 books to start with. I now have forty. I had to add inventory numbers and separate the author, title, and description with tabs. It was not too tough a process, but it would be more involved if I were to re-consult the books to amplify listings. I might have more to say about certain books and give fuller descriptions when listing on-line. But for now I will just try to get enough listed as quickly as possible, and maybe add more information later. Looks like it will be a fun process. I am not sure how successful this foray will be, but at least it will enable me to have the books’ availabilty be known somewhere.

---Comp equals simply compilation or complimentary or complimentary compilation. Free by request or if I am sent a disc it can be my way of reciprocation. Not very creative, but I enjoy them, and I enjoy sharing them. CD stands for compact disc or Chris Drumm. Pretty slick, eh?

---Just added a few more books I didn't know what to do with otherwise to my half.com listings. This ought to do it for the ones I had sitting around out in the open. I will be on the lookout for more books squirrelled away somewhere, as well as overstocks. Mainly, I guess, this will involve new books. For used and collectible books maybe I should look into getting an ABE or Bibliofind account--as the transition seemingly continues into cyberspace.

Maybe it is aimed at a different target audience than what I am a part of, but I would rather indulge in this stuff than try to gain pleasure from, say, the latest Songbook entry from Rod Stewart. At least that’s the theory. After listening, I can’t say I couldn’t have done without it, but a few tunes do stick in the head. Maybe that is not such a good thing, though. Certainly better than the brief forays into the Country Music Awards during commercials watching West Wing (while taping The O.C.).

Here’s the lastest news on all things Limited from Meisha Merlin:
“ Tuf Voyaging
The Tuf Voyaging title pages have been shipped off to Janet Aulisio, who is
autographing and doing the remarque sketch. The pages will then be sent to
George and Michael to be signed, and back to the printer to be tipped into
the book as it gets bound. Assuming this all goes as smoothly as planned,
the target release for the book is still mid-November.

A Clash of Kings
George and John have reviewed and approved the printer’s final layout. Soon
as we hear a target date from the printer, we’ll pass it on to you.

The latest on the sketches by John: John’s sketches are absolutely
beautiful! He did anywhere from 1 - 4 sketches per board, and doesn’t want
them cut. There are about 30 boards in total. As soon as John gives us a
price per board, we will pass that info along and will post scans and prices
on our website.

Thanks again for your patience concerning Book Two. We’re in the final
stretch now, and everything from this point on should go smoothly!

A Storm of Swords
Charles Vess surprised us today with a new piece of interior art that wasn’t
part of the plan for A Storm of Swords, but is a little something that he
and George worked out together. This new piece is a pencil sketch for a
painting that is intended to be front and back endpapers. Charles describes
this piece: “When painted it will be drenched in blue tones. At night in the
deep, snow covered woods, an exhausted Sam, Small Paul and Grenn encounter
the ‘Other’ riding on the dead, blue-eyed horse.” This means that A Storm
of Swords will contain four colour pieces rather than three. The maps that
were used as endpaper in the previous editions will be relocated to
somewhere in the interior. I’ve finally gotten the cover painting as well
as the new sketch uploaded to our site; you folks get exclusive look at them
until the pages for the book go live on our site. Here’s the link:

In addition to the endpaper painting, Charles has confirmed that he will be
doing everything in the interior, which means a complete new set of sigils
and chapter headings, as well as his beautiful interior artwork.

November, and on view as part of this exhibition will be the Storm cover and

Once George has completed the manuscript for the Fourth Book, he will be
forwarding a copy to Tom Canty to read and begin working on the interior
sketches.

A Dance With Dragons:
While in Toronto for World Con, George and Stephe took the opportunity to
have lunch with Ted Nasmith, artist for Book Five. Ted and George discussed
very basic concepts for the book (nothing specific, as it hasn’t been
written yet!) and Ted is excited to be a part of the project. Like Charles,
he will be creating the entire interior (artwork, sigils and chapter
headings) himself.

---It looks like maybe my computer scare yesterday was caused by a loose connection. One always hopes that things going wrong might not be as serious as feared. Unfortunately the worst is often what occurs. Machines are not made of protoplasm, which can often heal naturally. So far the unplugging and replugging the connections seems to have done the trick, but any minute I know I could find out different.

About 40% to go in the catalog, the rest are things that looked like they would otherwise be of interest. Lots of those boxes in storage now, but the ones here for supposed consignment sales claim greater priority.

---Interesting to see Neil’s picture on the Howard Dean Blog for America website. Good to get an inkling what all that all-night keyboard clatter was all about all summer. The sympatico programming crew profiled there makes me feel bad his on-line meetings were frequently stymied by our puny dial-up AOL internet connection; and by how hot it would get in his upstairs room, where despite central air in the house, it would be more like an attic sauna after days on end in the upper nineties. Unfit for computers and people trying to write code, but great to see how it may have been worthwhile. I just hope he doesn’t crash and burn thinking he can continue to usurp the basic principles of human sleep need.

The trade starts shipping the first week of October. The limited is still waiting on signatures, so probably won't ship until November.

Bubba Ho-Tep - Joe R. Lansdale & Don Coscarelli. Bubba will start shipping around the 15th of October, and is selling *very* well. It probably won't be sold out on publication, but it's looking like it'll be sold out very shortly thereafter.

Red World of Polaris - Clark Ashton Smith. This is finally at the printer, and should ship not too long after Bubba. We haven't got a ship date yet, but should have one shortly. This one is already out of print, so contact one of the dealers on our Links page and get your order in soon!

After that, we're taking a break for a few weeks, but look for the second Hodgson volume in November.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we'll start revealing the 2004 schedule, so keep an eye on the site.

---My 54th birthday is today. I celebrated by running eight miles. And coming back I decided to bypass the turnoff for home and run three more quarter-mile markers, adding yet another 1.5 miles. I figured I better try to stretch out the run so I would be sure to take a day off tomorrow. These nice fall days it is hard to go down into the cellar to work. Much easier to go for a run.

“RICHARD MATHESON'S KOLCHAK SCRIPTS NOW AT THE PRINTER
FOR LATE-NOVEMBER PUBLICATION

We are now taking orders for Richard Matheson's Kolchak Scripts which is at the printers for a late-November release. The 408 page 8 x 11 book includes three never before published Kolchak scripts penned by Matheson: "The Night Stalker" and "The Night Strangler" ABC-TV Movies of the Week which led to the Kolchak series, and "The Night Killers" which was to be a third Movie of the Week and remains optioned by Dan Curtis. Acclaimed Kolchak chronicler Mark Dawidziak edited the book and spoke with, among others, Matheson, Dan Curtis, Kolchak creator Jeff Rice and co-author of "The Night Killers" William F. Nolan. X-Files creator Chris Carter provides an afterword. The book includes over 30 illustrations (many of them never-before published from the archives of Dan Curtis and private collectors). The lettered edition contains an additional 8 never-before published illustrations.

The book comes in two states:

500 copy signed numbered edition (signed by Matheson)
52 copy lettered edition (signed by Matheson, Dan Curtis, William F. Nolan and editor Mark Dawidziak). The book will be housed in a lavish tri-fold traycase (similar to that used for PRIDE) and will contain a copy of a page from "The Night Killers" script signed by Matheson. Each lettered edition will contain a DIFFERENT page from the script, adding to its collectibility.

We had to negotiate the rights to publish this book with ABC-TV (among others) and can publish no more than the 500 numbered and 52 lettered copies. Kolchak fans have already purchased a portio of our print run.”

---Now that school is back in session I am hoping that the summer doldrumms that seem to have overwhelmed me (or at least slowed me down to a feeble pace) will give way to a period of renewed vigor. High in priority is the catching up on this weblog space.
---Not such a good start this morning, however, when I went down to the cellar to find I had left the dehumidifier basket slightly ajar, causing its auto-shutoff feature to malfunction. A goodly amount of overflow onto the floor made me to have to move quite a few boxes around, with not much around to be found. Fortunately I only put boxes of old magazines on the bottoms of stacks, so if they got wet it is no great catastrophe. Evenso, it looks like the magazines did not even get damp. Three bottom boxes soaked up a bit of moisture, but they will still be usable when they dry out, as they are doing now with certain alacrity on our back porch, where the sun is blistering again today. These are those boughten Store-Away boxes that stack well and provide good insulation for their contents.

---This weblog should be the place, even if all other evidences fail, where if someone is interested, they can find out if I am still alive. But lately even this has not been the case. I have fallen way behind in getting these posts put up. I won’t recite what excuses I might or might not have. Some of the reasons might become implicit in the content of intervening entries. Suffice it to say that I want to get caught up so I can keep these posts more contemporaneous. Instead of try to play catch-up by putting up the oldest entries and trying to work my way to the present, I will set up blank entries for the missing days, to be filled in as time and volition allow. I hope I can henceforth put up more recent entries on a more current-time basis. That way things will be in their proper order when they do appear, and I can still write things like this here and have them apply to the day they were posted.
